Current role and responsibilities

Johan is an independent consultant and assuror of corporate strategy, mana­gement systems, codes of conduct and reports in the field of environment, sustainability, social responsibility and safety. He also operates as a “responsible entrepreneur” himself.

Prior roles and responsibilities

Johan Piet worked as certified public accountant since 1972, specialised in the field of environment, sustainability and social responsibility, formerly director at Deloitte & Touche Environmental Services and KPMG Sustainability, presently independent working for TranspaRAbility, a specialised accountancy firm. He was part-time professor since 1979 at several universities, lecturing in the accountancy and in environmental management. He was the founder and first director/professor of the Institute for Environmental Management (WIMM) at the University of Amsterdam during the period 1989 until 1995.

Johan is recognised as one of the founders of theory and practice of “environmental accountancy” and “sustainability reporting”.

As a specialized environmental accountant since 1984, Johan concentrates on the following scope of the consultancy and assurance practice:

  • design and verification of sustainability reports
  • counselling and coaching the Board of Directors about societal risks and relevant solutions at strategic level
  • corporate sustainability strategy, communication and performance evaluation
  • design or review of management and information systems for sustain­ability, integrity and conduct
  • environmental management accounting (investments and costs)
  • arbitrage, mediation, expert in court and litigation support
  • risk analysis and valuation of sustainability aspects of corporate strategy, valuation of shares and due diligence
  • in-house training for internal audits of sustainability reports

The following published environmental and sustainability reports were verified under the responsibility of Johan: Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM), DSM chemicals, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Co-operative Rabobank, TNT, Dutch Rail Road Services, Ministry of Defence, Co-operation of Provinces and waste processors.
